In Chinese Medicine, the Heart is known as The Emperor of our physiology and spirit. Its role is to guide our actions in service of a purposeful, easeful, and aligned life. The Emperor helps you feel clarity, emotional connection, joy, purpose, and inner calm.
To do this well, the Emperor relies on the Heart Protector—the Pericardium—a fluid-filled membrane that surrounds the heart. Its job is to protect us from indiscriminately giving away our emotional, spiritual, and physiological resources when it isn’t safe or appropriate. Think of it as the door to your heart. It helps you to maintain boundaries, allow love in when it’s safe, and protect you from emotional overwhelm.
When our hearts are in balance, we feel open yet grounded and connected yet safe.
Can my heart be too open or too closed?
When relationship disappointments or heartbreaks have been too many, the Heart Protector can become jammed shut, making it very difficult to let people in. This can lead to emotional numbness, difficulty trusting, fear of vulnerability, loneliness, or disconnection.
On the other hand, if the heart has experienced frequent boundary violations or unstable relationships–especially early in life–the Heart Protector may become jammed open, leading to anxiety, codependency, overexposure, fear of abandonment, or feeling chronically unprotected in relationships.
