I have a love/hate relationship with social media. On one hand, it’s inspiring (tiny houses, macrame, furniture repurposing). It’s also a growth opportunity, putting myself “out there,” sharing how I help people.
Of course, there’s the downside. Doom.
Saturday morning, after a casual scroll, I found myself awash in fear, researching how to learn ham radio (joking, not joking). I knew I needed to snap out of it. I meditated, did my best to shake it off.
Fast forward to Saturday night. I attended a gala for a nonprofit started by friends who lost their child to cancer. The event brought people together in service, in care, in generosity. It was deeply inspiring. By the end of the night, the inside of my mind felt palpably different. I was smiling, laughing, optimistic.
That experience helped me lean into the reality that anything is possible when community comes together.
Chinese medicine offers a lens for all of this. The emotion of fear is tied to the kidneys and the water element. Service and community are tied to the earth element. Earth controls water, and its out-of-alignment expression, the way an earthen dam holds water in a lake.
Sometimes the solution is acupuncture or herbs. Sometimes the prescription is switching up your behavior, your routines, your habits.
My own medicine stared me in the face this weekend.
