With autumn comes the metal element, and its themes tend to show up whether we invite them or not. You may notice yourself taking stock of the year, re-evaluating your values or assessing whether the direction of your life still feels meaningful and aligned.
A metal element person feels best when they’re pointed toward their own compass and living in step with the people around them. That means following through on commitments, being tuned in to etiquette, and generally making sure others feel comfortable too.
Integrity captures metal energy with order, structure, a kind of moral uprightness — doing what you said you’d do.
We all benefit from nurturing the metal element in our life. This is what balance looks like. Metal element people have a particular ease with and propensity for metal element themes.
There is always a flip side to the qualities of each element. The pursuit of integrity, propriety, systems, procedures, assessment, tracking… When taken to extreme… can spill into the realm of perfectionism…
When you’re boxed in by the right way of doing things, or bending over backward so everyone else gets to experience ease and beauty, or holding so tightly to the rules that there’s no room left for anything new – that is confining. Not just in your life, but in your body. Metal element confinement has its own signature tension: a general inability to relax, digestive pain, chest tightness, pelvic pain….
Autumn is the season to check your life for alignment with your own integrity – including having integrity to comfort and ease in your own body and life. If perfectionism (and the tension that comes with it) is something you struggle with, we can work with it both physically and energetically through acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

P.S. It feels like there’s always a “Best of” contest running in the Bay Area… And wouldn’t you know it, The Best of Albany voting is under way. If you have benefitted from our work together I would be grateful for your vote. This kind of recognition is so helpful for helping people reach me and my unique style of practice. P.S.2. I have not yet heard the results of the East Bay Express contest.
