Does a paradox live within you too?

There’s a paradox that lives within me.

I deeply enjoy being around people—chatting, laughing, having my mind blown by new perspectives from smart, wise humans…

AND I deeply enjoy being by myself: studying, crafting, walking, knitting—just being silent.

As the days grow shorter, that inward pull toward solitude grows stronger.

AND yet, this season draws us into traditions filled with merriment and celebration. Frequently. With flair.

Light and connection matter as the days darken. AND also… can there be too much?

Everyone’s holiday needs and tendencies are different.

  • Wood Element folks might organize a Turkey Trot as their contribution to the festivities.
  • Fire Element folks may feel tempted to hit every holiday party (with a themed sweater for each one).
  • Earth Element folks might want to gather ALL their people for latke-making or cookie-baking marathons.
  • Metal Element folks will carefully ration their energy for the few gatherings they attend—then take an Epsom salt bath to recover.
  • Water Element folks might prefer a quiet solstice ritual at home, alone.

Caveat, these are lighthearted snapshots of the different elemental personality types and most of us are blends. There’s a wide range of potential experiences. My point: just because culture tells us we “should” be out merry-making doesn’t mean that’s what’s most aligned for you. Knowing this, we can let others be themselves, too.

Do you feel the paradox of wanting to host ALL the people… while also wanting to retreat into a cozy winter hobbit-den? It’s a unique time of year.
