What Is Feng Shui?

Feng shui is a healing modality, with roots in Chinese indigenous spirituality, that diagnoses and rebalances the disruption in flow energy between a person’s home, life, relationships and health.

Have you ever changed a piece of art on your wall and the whole space felt different? Have you ever received an office upgrade and realized how the old one, with acoustic tile ceiling and no windows, was such a downer? Have you ever entered a conference room and felt the heavy, dank energy of whoever was occupying the space a short while before?

Then you already know that the spaces we spend time in affect us.

And feng shui is so much deeper than this.

Feng Shui is the study of how the five elements are present in our home and our lives, much like nutrients in our bodies and how their interaction with ourselves and our spaces can augment or hinder qi flowing into and out of our lives.

“Feng shui doesn’t require that you spend tons of money on new, high design furniture.”

What do I mean by qi?
On a physiological level, I’m talking about metabolic energy, vitality…
On a practical level, I’m talking about money, resources, opportunities…
On a human level, I’m talking about romantic partnership, friendship, harmonious family, helpful people…
On a spiritual level, I’m talking about clarity, insight, wisdom, creativity, delight…

Feng shui allows us to diagnose and treat these imbalances in our homes and lives with fun, creative and magical solutions. These solutions *can* involve design features of your home but they do not need to. They scan be small, symbolic, ritual, and even involve personal aesthetic, daily practices or inner attitude.

    About Marie

I encountered Feng Shui while beginning to study Chinese Medicine back in 2007. I shared with a friend, a Feng Shui consultant, that the stress of being in school and starting a business was causing stress in my relationship. She suggested just a few simple remedies to open the channels of communication, love and trust between us and it worked. Feng Shui had my attention.

Over the years, I applied Feng Shui to the homes that I lived in and the offices that I practiced out of. I loved the way that Feng Shui made my home and office feel like sacred spaces designed to move my life forward. I have found over the years that if I was dealing with an issue in a certain life theme, I could enhance an area of my home to align my vision with how life was unfolding.

I also saw that Feng Shui had the potential to help my patients. While I could help people be less anxious or sleep better, I often saw that more could be done when challenging life circumstances (like relationship disharmony or feeling stuck in the wrong job) could cause so much stress. This was my inspiration to begging a more formal study and to become certified as a consultant.

    About Black Sect Feng Shui

I practice a system of Feng Shui called Black Sect Buddhist Feng Shui. This system was influenced by a blend of philosophies, including Bon (Tibetan Indigenous religion), Buddhist, Confucian, Daoist and pre-Daoist, fang shi (folk healers or magicians) traditional knowledge.

This system is unique from other Feng Shui traditions in that it places the Feng Shui map at the location of the front door, rather than the compass directions. This was a modification innovated to accommodate the modern world with roads providing conduits of energy to homes. It also relies on spiritual cultivation (of any tradition) and the practice of intention in the use of prescriptions or remedies.

Black Sect Buddhist Feng Shui was brought to the United States and innovated by Professor Lin Yun, lovingly referred to as “Professor” by his students. He began his study under Lama De De at the Yonghe temple in Beijing, China when he was 6 years old. At the age of 17, he traveled to Taiwan to continue his studies under feng shui philosophers and Buddhist masters, including Master Hui Chich-Fu and Master Kuei-ying.
