How do you befriend darkness when eternal summer is prized?

Are you sleeping later, craving quiet, maybe a little extra introspective? This is normal! The earth, the seasons, the natural progression of energy is beckoning you inward. Nature is asking you to slow down, rest more, sleep more and involute.

Can you yield to the energetic shift?

It might feel uncomfortable at first. Modern life is designed to keep you operating in an eternal summer. Culture is asking you to meet your annual sales goals, to keep working under those fluorescent lights after the sun has set and to attend all the holiday gatherings.

I get it. I’m not immune to the dissonance between the demands of nature and culture.

But if you can:

  • Have intention (*This* is what I want my experience to be.)
  • Commit and schedule the time (At these dates/times I will schedule nothing… stay in for cozy family board game night… Or sit by the fire and watch the raindrops fall.)
  • Bolster your boundaries (Thank you so much for the invite to your amazing-sounding New Years party. I won’t be able to attend.(**Period** No explanation required or owed.))

The payoff is delicious.

AND I know some of you were smacked on the behind by the time change. And all of us are heartbroken by the violence in the middle east. And some of you are dealing with very personal grief or holiday dread. And many of you are already talking about the earliest threat of seasonal affective disorder, melancholy and the worry of looming depression.

I know it’s not delicious for everyone.

Which brings me to my Chinese Medicine Public Service Announcement:  Be gentle with yourself. The clash between nature and culture is challenging at this time of year and the friction between the two realities is uncomfortable, even troubling. And for those who struggle with fatigue, grief and depression, this time is even harder.

Of course, if you are worried about the severity of your fatigue, friction or depression, Chinese Medicine and acupuncture can help.
