This is a common time of year when patients tell me that something must be wrong if they are this tired.
To which I say: You are right.
On one hand, it is wrong that our culture doesn’t give us enough time—or permission—to rest. Right now, lazy days with a book by the fire, sleeping longer, and gently pacing work and exercise are potent ingredients for replenishing the batteries that sustain us throughout the year—and our lifetime.
If your obligations and deadlines are keeping you from enjoying this kind of restorative rest, your job is self-compassion.
And… if you’re tired all the time despite having opportunities to rest—or if your fatigue is preventing you from meeting non-negotiable commitments or enjoying life at all—then you have a different job. That job is to slowly turn the ship around with careful attention to nourishment, a closer look at key laboratory biomarkers, and interventions that support depletion and recovery.
