In my practice, I often meet people who love a good “cleanse.” They’re drawn to systems that promise shakes, juices, pre-set meals, and supplements — motivated by visions of reduced inflammation, less bloat, and a faster metabolism. The appeal is real. But what if the cleanse culture we’ve absorbed is actually working against some of us?
Why Chinese Medicine doesn’t recommend regular cleanses
Here’s something that might surprise you: Chinese Medicine does not recommend cleanses as a regular habit. In fact, juice fasts, daily smoothies, and elimination programs can actually undermine your health in certain situations.
If any of the following sound familiar, a “cleanse” is likely not what your body or nervous system need right now:
- Food feels like a constant struggle
- Almost everything you eat causes symptoms
- Loose stools are your norm
- You have a history of disordered eating
- Your enthusiasm for “clean eating” is tipping into stress or preoccupation
Spring is the season of the Liver — and that’s good news for cleansing
Spring, however, is the perfect time to clean things up. In Chinese Medicine, spring is governed by the Wood element and its corresponding organ: the Liver.
The liver is one of the hardest-working organs in the body. It metabolizes proteins, fats, sugars, and hormones. It filters toxins from the environment, household products, processed foods, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, and cannabis. It is constantly processing on your behalf.
In Chinese Medicine, the Liver and Wood element go beyond physical detoxification. They also support your ability to hold a clear vision for your life and move forward with confidence and purpose. When the Liver is burdened or out of balance, we may feel stuck, irritable, or foggy — physically and emotionally.
The Liver deserves our attention this season. The question is just how we give it that attention.
You don’t need an elaborate cleanse system to support your Liver this spring. How acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can help
Here’s the genuinely good news: you don’t need to buy an expensive cleanse kit. You don’t need to fast, juice, go cold turkey on sugar – or swear it off forever. Lowering inflammation and supporting your liver doesn’t have to be a harrowing experience.
Would you like smoother hormone cycles, better digestion, and less stress this spring? Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine offer a humane, individualized path to feeling better — one that works with your body rather than pushing against it.
Together, we can design a gentle, sustainable, and genuinely effective plan to clean things up this season.
I invite you to schedule your first — or next — opens in a new windowacupuncture appointment this spring.
